Let us have a look at few of my interesting cases. The X-ray shown below is of a 78 year old lady who had an uncemented bipolar prostheisi which had become loose and had sunk inside. She was not able to walk for 2 years and had a shortening of 2 inches.

She inderwent a complex revision and could get her lenghth back! She was revised using the uncem, eted prosthesis. Note the screws fixing the cup to the host bone instead of cement.

Total Hip replacement

We have dealt with issues of uncemented and cemented hip replacements earlier. Surgeons and engineers all over the world are continuously trying to get a joint manufactured which will not only last longer but also will give natural function back. Resurfacing hip is one such operation. Traditionally uncemeted hip replacements were done for young arthritic patients. A traditional hip surgery takes away most of the ball of the thigh bone away.

In hip resurfacing surgery we take only the damaged cartilager away and hence the patient can even squat down! The function after such surgery is identical to a normal joint. A famous judo player popularized this joint bacuse he successfully won various competitions after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery!
